Surfing in Niseko?

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Niseko Japan;
A slight divergence from our typical updates. We though we would let you in on an Niseko alternative lifestyle - the one away from Niseko’s famed powder.

Aside from Burton’s new snowboard without bindings, little does anyone know that within a 40min drive of Niseko you can get good surf…year round.

Winter is the best time for waves. On first impression it is not for the faint hearted - snow on ground, frozen toes, tight muscles…however, if you have the right equipment it can be a comfortable and rewarding session.

Niseko has a lot of lifestyle depth - a lot to offer other than its renown winter powder snow glory. Living here year round cannot be compared to anywhere else in the world. The choice of sports in green seasons is on the increase with everything from Hokkaido triathlons (I am sure we will see a Niseko triathlon in the not too distant future), surfing, alpine mountain bike rides, swimming in warm deep green clear volcanic lakes or even just going for a walk to deeply experience each of Niseko’s distinctly different seasons.

We now see the original purchasers of Niseko property and Niseko real estate whom used to solely visit for the snow, now visiting in the non-winter months to experience to other side of Niseko - a testament to Niseko’s longevity when we see people investing not just for the financial gains but also for the infinite Niseko lifestyle return.

The weekends session - not many places in the world can you ski and snowboard insane knee-to-waste deep powder then surf 2 to 3 ft right handers…the same day…

The Vale Niseko Construction Update Dec 5

Friday, December 5th, 2008

The Vale Niseko hits its milestone today with the concrete pouring of the onsen and lobby areas.

Winter works wrap-up starts soon with the builder, Nakayama Gumi, being eight days ahead of schedule already.

A wet winter day in Niseko today with an unusual +6 degrees. Great for the concrete pour, not so good for skiing. It is only temporary being a warm front before the cold weather hits tonight. We are expecting knee deep turns by Sunday…

Niseko Snow:
When the snow starts to dump we often wonder what the season will hold.

Without a crystal ball, it would be reasonable to assume the best way to predict the future fall would be to look back via historical data and find a trend. The graph below is from data on the Niseko Hirafu’s main website showing ski seasons for the past 10 years.

This information is based on readings at the 1000m mark and shows an average annual snowfall of only 7m or so, which is a far cry from the 15 and 16 metres the Niseko property and Niseko real estate companies state. However, accurate snow data for Niseko is just not available - the numbers this graph is based on is the most accurate data at hand.

With Forbes Traveller last year announcing Niseko as the 2nd snowiest resort in the world it is assumed they used numbers from this graph, Kutchan (Niseko’s main service town) and other lowlying areas around the mountain, applied a ratio and came up with their 15.11m.

Whilst it may seem we are taking a slightly negative approach to Niseko’s official snowfall amounts, it would be bankable that when they douse a measuring system on par with say North American skifields, it would not be surprising if the data actually shows an increase on expectations…the clockwork Niseko snow is almost a phenomenon, as anyone having done a season in Niseko will attest.

So looking back…last year Niseko received an unofficial 10.5m of snow or so, 30% less than its average, or, when taking the highest and lowest years out, it was the lowest amount of snow in ten years. So lets compare this  - take Whistler, it averages an official 10.2m…this concludes that Niseko’s 2nd worst season in ten years is better than Whistlers average. So if you have two weeks vacation and your hunting powder, how can you even think about going anywhere else…
